Statistically, Obertauern is the best place in the entire Alps for finding natural snow. The season stretches from November until May. The village is located at 1,740 meters and the ski area goes up to 2,350 meters, which makes it a good choice if you want to experience good snow.

Skiing in Obertauern

Obertauern ski system is built on the peaks that surround the valley, with the village right in the middle. The system is shaped like a sort of cauldron so that you can ski facing all directions. This gives you flexibility in case you like facing the south and get some sun or have the cold fluffy snow that is usally found on slopes that face north. It is also very well designed with few transfer runs which makes it a good place for snowboarders.

In total there are about 100 kilometers of ski slopes and 26 ski lifts. Moreover, there are good opportunities to get some off-piste skiing with easy access directly from the ski lifts. Try outKessel Spitz for example.

Most of the slopes are red or blue, but there are several really exciting black runs, including the mogul piste G2. Some of the steepest slopes in the Alps are found here, with a vertical drop of over 600 meters, so steep that no machine can master it. Head to the area Gamsleitenpisten for the most daring slopes.

If you are looking for family-friendly slopes that are more moderate, you should go to Sonne Lift or the children’s area of Edelweiss.
