Equipment Tips for Beginners

If you’re new to the world of skiing, you’re also likely new to the world of equipment. Many people choose to rent their skis, poles, and boots during that first ski holiday, and with good reason. Purchasing this type of equipment will not only make preparing for your holiday significantly more expensive, but it may make actually reaching your destination more expensive as many airlines charge additional fees for checking bulky bring-alongs like these.

If you’re not buying, though, where do you turn for great equipment? A rental or pro shop near where you’re staying, of course. Wondering if rental equipment is really a good idea when you’re flying down the slopes faster than you’d ever imagined? Actually, it’s a fantastic idea. Most shops do an excellent job of maintaining their gear so they’ll win your loyalty. What’s more, though, is that they can help you find the perfect size to meet your needs. Here are just a few things you may want remember, though.
  • Ski boots are uncomfortable. You can get the best fit in the land, and they’re still going to feel odd. They’re supposed to feel odd, so don’t make your rental shop attendant go through every pair on the rack.
  • Make sure everything fits well BEFORE you leave. The last thing you want to do is ski off the lift only to determine later that nothing fits as it should. Try a few different sizes on if you’re not sure about anything.
  • Be honest about your abilities. If you’ve never skied before, it’s best to let the attendant know that up front so he or she can show you to the best choices to suit your needs.
Your equipment is absolutely going to define your experience, and you don’t want poor equipment to help you decide you don’t actually like skiing after all. Make certain you get the best stuff you can rent before hitting the slopes that first day.
